Fans are already turned off by Miona and Jibri, who have appeared on just one episode of 90 Day Fiancé. Miona’s look sparked a racial controversy when viewers noticed that she is appropriating black hairstyles and using a dark spray tan, which led to questions about her ethnicity.
Spoiler alert, Miona is not black
In a recent Instagram post Miona fired back at the people who have been calling out her blackfishing. “I am Serbian!” she wrote. “But let me say this, I don’t only have Serbian genes, based on a DNA test I have both Mexican and Middle Easter background, but I will always represent myself as Serbian because that’s my culture.” Miona went on to say that she finds behavior questioning her race abusive and that in her country people do not abuse strangers online. She also explained that braided hair goes back hundreds of years in Serbia and that she was taught to braid her hair as a young girl.
Miona made it clear that she shouldn’t have to explain how she looks to anyone and that she can wear whatever she wants. Jibri chimed in in the comments adding that he too has struggled with others’ opinions of his race through his lifetime. “You are human!” he wrote. “You will never be enough for them. I’m too black to be white, I’m too white to be black, but I still walk around with a target on my back.”
Is Miona’s look a fashion choice or is she appropriating black culture?
It’s hard to argue with that, as Miona should be allowed to choose her own make up and hairstyle without being judged, but the issue is about race, not style. The explanation was not enough for some fans who explained that while having Mexican and Middle Eastern roots is well and fine, coming onto an American TV show in an African American “costume” is not. Appropriating black culture is not a fashion statement and that’s that.
Aside from the racial controversy, Miona and Jibri have been irking 90 Day Fiancé fans for other reasons. First of all, it is just too obvious that they came on the show for the fame. They are treating 90 Day as an extension of their Instragram, where they actively promote themselves. Jibri posts multiple times a day about his projects and is now going live with segments which he calls “Tea with Jibri”. His Instagram presence is just too much and takes the mystery out of the show. It’s not fun to “get to know” a couple who’ve given it all away already.
Are Miona and Jibri already married?
Perhaps the most annoying detail that has surfaced about Jibri and Miona is that their storyline is fraudulent. According to a recently surfaced article, Jibri gave an interview in 2020 referring to Miona as his wife, which would mean that they have been married for 2 years already. They also share the last name “Bell” in their Instagram names. If they lied to get on the show, this would only support the theory that they are trying to use it as an extension of their social media, and nobody is interested in watching a married couple act out a fake storyline on a reality show. Overall, Jibri and Miona misread their audience and their efforts to exploit the show seem to be backfiring. Perhaps their 90 Day Fiancé paychecks will get them out of his parents’ house and into their dream LA life. Only time will tell.
